GES estimates the total value of the 150+ mission critical hardware items we've been asked to safely and smoothly deliver to orbit to be in the billions of dollars. All to say, there's a lot riding on the products we deliver to our customers.

AESMIR

The Airborne Earth Science Microwave Imaging Radiometer

Project Overall Objective

An aircraft remote sensing instrument containing sub millimeter-wave receivers is being designed and fabricated for the measurement of soil moisture and hydrological studies over continental regions.

Genesis Engineering Company's task for this project

  • Develop a layout for the antenna instruments ensuring critical field of view
  • Design structural container to house instruments and components for flight use
  • Develop a layout scheme for all electrical components that will allow placement flexibility
  • Develop drafting prints for all structural components

  • Genesis� collimator assembly supported critical spacecraft tests
  • Designed, built and tested FUSE collimator support structure
  • Structure supported 1000 lb load to tight tolerances in environmental chamber displacement amplitude of 0.0001" at -77°C, contamination free)

HESSI

The High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager

Project Overall Objective

to explore the basic physics of particle acceleration and explosive energy release in solar flares.

Genesis Engineering Company's task for this project

  • Assisted in re-design, fabrication and testing of nine grid assemblies
  • Rebuilt Van Beek instruments and re-worked kinematic mounts on Ticomet instrument assemblies

HOST

Hubble Space Telescope On-Orbit System Test

Project Overall Objective

To demonstrate that electronic and thermodynamic equipment slated for installation on the Hubble Telescope in 1999 worked in the radiation and microgravity environment.

Genesis Engineering Company's task for this project

Genesis' support of this mission spanned very large and rugged to small and sensitive

  • Designed, built and test controller avionics box
  • Designed, built and tested Solid State recorder (SSR) transport module
  • Designed, built and tested the interface for the 486 Advanced computer
  • Modified experiment support structure

Hubble SM-1

Hubble Servicing Mission 1

Project Overall Objective

Servicing Mission 1, launched in December 1993, was the first opportunity to conduct planned maintenance on the telescope. In addition, new instruments were installed and the optics flaw in Hubble's primary mirror was corrected.

Hubble SM-2

Hubble Servicing Mission 2

Project Overall Objective

The Second Servicing Mission, launched February 11, 1997, greatly improved Hubble's productivity. The installation of new instruments extended Hubble's wavelength range into the near infrared for imaging and spectroscopy, allowing us to probe the most distant reaches of the universe. The replacement of failed or degraded spacecraft components increased efficiency and performance.

  • Designed, built, and tested four protective enclosures to support cargo delivery
  • Design incorporated innovative �tool-less� EVA interface, heaters and data interfaces
  • Performed crew training, built crew training aids and provided crew familiarization support

Hubble SM-3A

Hubble Servicing Mission 3A

Project Overall Objective

Servicing Mission 3A successfully replaced equipment and performed maintenance upgrades to the Hubble Space Telescope. Although no new scientific instruments were installed, many activities took place over 3 "EVA" days. The originally planned 4 days of EVA were changed to 3 days because of the weather-delayed launch. The deorbit time was fixed for this mission in order to avoid any possible Y2K problems.

  • Emergency repair mission (4th of 6 gyros failed - 3 required for ops)
  • Design and fabrication of protective enclosure vibration isolation systems
  • Design and modification of protective enclosures
  • Supported training of mission critical personnel and crew

Hubble SM-3B

Hubble Servicing Mission 3B

Project Overall Objective

During SM3B a new science instrument was installed: the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). Several other activities were accomplished as well over a 12-day mission with 5 spacewalks.

  • Designed, fabricated and built four protective enclosures to support delivery of critical mission hardware
  • Supporting neutral buoyancy and crew familiarization
  • Provided mission support including ORU integration and de-integration

Laser Cleaning (USDC)

Project Overall Objective

Genesis Engineering Solutions has completed Phase I and Phase II investigation of dry laser cleaning for the United States Display Consortium (USDC). During this project, Genesis Engineering Solutions developed an excimer-based dry laser cleaning system that was used for dry laser cleaning of flat panel display systems.

Phase I Study

  • Designed & acquired laser equipment to perform Flat Panel Display (FPD) R&D
  • Conducted R&D on Flat Panel Display for 3 industry standard samples

Phase II Study

  • Redesigned & fabricated Beam Delivery System
  • Conducted R&D on same 3 Flat Panel Display samples

New Horizons

Project Overall Objective

New Horizons is the first mission in NASA's New Frontiers program of medium-class planetary missions. It will be the first spacecraft to visit Pluto and its moon, Charon.

ST5

Space Technology 5

Project Overall Objective

To demonstrate and flight-qualify several innovative technologies and concepts for application to future space missions. The goal was to reduce the weight, size, and cost of space missions while increasing their technical capabilities and concepts.

ST5 consists of three micro-satellites exploring the Earth's magnetic fields. It included designing and building miniaturized components and technologies that can be integrated into small satellites, known as "small-sats". Each small-sat will weigh approximately 47 pounds when fully fueled, flying clusters of multiple satellites reduces the risk of an entire mission failing if one system or instrument fails.

ST5 is part of NASA's New Millenium program.

SHOSS

SPACEHAB Oceaneering Space Systems Box

Project Overall Objective

SHOSS is an unpressurized "tool box" attached to the top of the ICC with the capacity to carry up to 181 kilograms (400 pounds) of tools and other flight equipment. It was delivered to the International Space Station on Mission STS-96.

SDO

Solar Dynamics Observatory

Project Overall Objective

SDO is designed to help us understand the Sun's influence on Earth and Near-Earth space by studying the solar atmosphere on small scales of space and time and in many wavelengths simultaneously. The Solar Dynamics Observatory is the first mission for NASA's Living With a Star (LWS) Program. It launched on February 11th, 2010. Genesis Engineering Solutions provided spacecraft design, development, verification and test support for the SDO project.

Specific tasks and responsibilities included:

  • Phase B conceptual design of the Observatory: Propulsion Module, Spacecraft Bus, Instrument Module, Solar Arrays and High Gain Antennas
  • Detailed designs, drawings and analysis for the Spacecraft Bus Module
  • Detailed designs and drawings for the Solar Arrays, the Solar Array Deployment System, and the High Gain Antenna Deployment System
  • Development, test and integration of the Solar Arrays, the Solar Array Deployment System, and the High Gain Antenna Deployment System
  • Spacecraft verification

Small Fine Arm Transport Container

STEREO

Solar Terrestrial RElations Observatory

Project Overall Objective

STEREO is the third mission in NASA's Solar Terrestrial Probes program (STP). This two-year mission, launched October 2006, will provide a unique and revolutionary view of the Sun-Earth System. The two nearly identical observatories - one ahead of Earth in its orbit, the other trailing behind - will trace the flow of energy and matter from the Sun to Earth. They will reveal the 3D structure of coronal mass ejections; violent eruptions of matter from the sun that can disrupt satellites and power grids, and help us understand why they happen. STEREO will become a key addition to the fleet of space weather detection satellites by providing more accurate alerts for the arrival time of Earth-directed solar ejections with its unique side-viewing perspective.
